Description

West Elmwood Housing Development Corporation (WEHDC) is a 501c3 non-profit community development corporation that has been serving the housing and community needs in the West End of Providence since 1970. Its mission is to promote the development of healthy, sustainable communities through housing services and to foster community leadership.

The Sankofa Initiative was established in 2011 through the WEHDC to address the need for increased access to healthy, fresh, local, affordable, and culturally appropriate food in the West End of Providence, Rhode Island. Projects of the Sankofa Initiative include the Sankofa World Market, community gardens, greenhouse, and a community kitchen.

The Sankofa Community Kitchen, adjacent to a community room, will provide a critical resource for Sankofa residents and the broader West End neighborhood. While Sankofa Farm addresses health disparities, Sankofa Kitchen will provide a platform to address the economic development disparities in our community.
